Homestead and Princeton’s premium Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo Academy. Serving the community with quality instruction in health, fitness, sport, and self defense.
Our Mission:
We strive to consistently provide THE BEST Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo instruction in southern Miami-Dade County
The truth is that there are many instructors in South Florida who are good at fighting, but there are several factors which we believe set us apart:
An A+ Culture: We aim to maintain a respectful and welcoming learning environment geared towards producing results.
Brand new facility, cleaned twice daily. ALWAYS kept clean and hygeinic.
Tenured instruction: Coaching staff with combined experience of over 30 years in grappling and striking martial arts.
Focus on safety: All employees vetted with criminal background checks
Classes for students of all ages, skill levels, and athletic ability
FREE private introductory lesson AND two free classes.
No hidden secrets: Unfortunately, the culture at some martial arts schools encourages instructors to hoard information in order to inflate their own ego and make students feel dependent on their knowledge. We feel that these practices contribute to a poor culture and violate the trust you place in the service we provide. For this reason, we provide every student with comlimentary access to a detailed open source curriculum to accelerate your learning.
Focus on injury prevention: All practical martial arts can be rough, and it’s hard to be consistent if you’re constantly getting injured. This is why we offer a comprehensive beginner’s program which focuses on safe and efficient training practices and mitigating the chance of injury.
Benefits of Practicing martial arts:
Weight Loss: While many people start martial arts training for self defense, the average American is at far greater risk of adverse effects of sedentary lifestyle and poor diet than from a physical attack. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, and statistics show that 41% of American adults can be classified as obese, with nearly 1 in 10 having Type 2 Diabetes. Childhood obesity rates are at a record high of 18%. Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for weight loss, with an average of 700-1000 calories burned per class. Studies show that even moderate exercise 3 days per week is associated with a substantial decrease in risk of cardiac death. We believe that Jiu-Jitsu is more than a fun hobby; it’s an investment in your future!
Stress Relief: 33% of American adults report feeling extreme stress on a frequent basis. This can have siginficant effects both physical and mental health. There is evidence that endorphin release from vigorous exercise can significantly improve symptoms of chronic stress exposure.
Self Defense: This one is obvious. We do not encourage our students to seek out trouble, however, in rare occasions even average people are placed in situations of unavoidable conflict. This is even more likely in the case of people working in security or emergency services. There is a tremendous amout of relief and confidence that comes from knowing that you will be prepared if trouble finds you.
Bully prevention: This is an extention of self defense. Bullying is a major public health problem among children and increases risk of poor health, social, and educational outcomes both in childhood and adulthood. While the solution to this is complicated, the reality is that most bullies are looking for an easy target. Evidence shows that the confidence gained from proficiency in a martial art makes children less likely to be targeted and more likely to stand up for those who are.
Meet new people/network: Recent studies have shown that between 36 and 60% of adults report feeling chronically lonely. Social contact is an import part of the human experience, but many people report feeling more isolated despite frequent superficial connection with others over social media. Jiu-Jitsu and Judo training provides an opportunity to socialize with other people from all walks of life in a healthy and productive environment.
Have Fun/ Challenge yourself: This is probably the most important one- because it’s fun! There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from accomplishing difficult things. Jiu-Jitsu is not easy, but that’s what makes it great. It’s mentally stimulating and there’s always a new problem to solve.
Instructors
David Pupo - Lead Instructor
David is our head instructor at Ivy League Jitsu. He began training in the Cuban Olympic style of Judo at age 4 under his father, who is a judo black belt with over 30 years of experience. In 2013, he began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to improve his ground work. He adapted quickly and found success in many high level tournaments. After 9 years of hard training, he received his black belt from coach Javill Byron in 2022. In addition to being a fierce competitor, David is an excellent instructor with more than six years of experience teaching students from ages 6-60. He has excellent attention to detail and takes the time to make sure each student gets the personal attention he or she needs to absorb the core points of each lesson.
Patrick Leber - Adjunct Instructor
